End disease.
Fund science directly.
AI has given us new tools to discover cures—and the resources to pursue them. OpenCures is a philanthropic platform that lets you donate directly to fund scientific research that develops cures.
For most of history, disease was fate. In the last century we learned it does not have to be.
Yet today, no one is incentivized to develop cures.
Private markets
Biotechs are incentivized to treat symptoms instead of the root cause. They earn recurring revenue from patients who stay sick and take their therapies for life.
OpenCures
Deploys philanthropic dollars to fund fundamental research for developing cures.
Traditional philanthropy
Disease charities fund patient support, advocacy and awareness. Real help, but it doesn't change the underlying numbers.
Give a dollar to the largest cancer charity in America and 24 cents of it funds research.
The rest goes to services, fundraising, advocacy and overhead. Some of that is good work. None of it ends cancer.
American Cancer Society, fiscal year 2024: $845M in total expenses, $199M of it on research. From the BBB Wise Giving Alliance review.
Therapies manage symptoms for as long as you keep taking them. A cure fixes the underlying disease, for everyone who will ever have it.
Fund leading researchers laser-focused on developing cures for all of humanity.
You pick the disease area. OpenCures identifies leading experts and experiments to fund.
Every round of experiments makes the next round smarter. Your gift starts the loop, and each result decides where the next dollar goes.
Fund
You give to a disease area you care about.
Allocate
Our AI scientist and a medical advisory board of leading researchers decide together where that capital goes: a focused research organization (FRO) for that disease.
Experiment
The FRO runs its experiments through our network of partner CROs and high-throughput labs. Every result, positive or negative, comes back as structured data, so you see what your gift paid for and what it found.
Learn
The data feeds the AI scientist and the board, so the next round of funding goes to better experiments than the last.
Today the work runs through partner labs. As autonomous robotic labs come online, the loop gets faster and cheaper. Proceeds from cures go back into funding more research.
Give the tax-efficient way, and more of your gift reaches the lab.
OpenCures runs on donor-advised funds. Give appreciated stock instead of cash: you deduct its full market value this year and never pay capital gains on the growth. Then direct it to the disease you care about.
Illustration assumes a California resident in the top brackets. The $800,000 gain is taxed at 37.1%: 20% federal, 3.8% net investment income tax and 13.3% California. The deduction is worth up to 48.3%: 35% federal (the 2026 cap for the top bracket) plus 13.3% California. Shares must be held more than a year after you exercise the options. Federal deductions for gifts of stock count only above 0.5% of income and are limited to 30% of income each year, with the rest carried forward up to five years. This is not tax advice; talk to your advisor.
We start with latent viruses: infections that lie dormant and the immune system never learns to clear.
Then the next disease. Then the next. Every round of the flywheel makes the following one faster.
A new generation of givers is about to deploy tens of billions a year. Where it goes will shape the next twenty years of science.
